Recently, officers from both Fairview Township and Newberry Township Police Departments joined forces in an “active shooter” training exercise that was held on April 23 thru April 25, 2012. This training was different than in the past sessions as it was held inside an area business, FCI in Newberry Township, during normal business hours. Officers arrived at the building as if a “real” shooter was inside. When conducting this type of training, officers typically use vacant buildings. With this most recent training session, it provided the officers with the opportunity to work with not only an unfamiliar building, but with non-police role players who provided unscripted responses to each scenario exercised. The training was also beneficial to the business as it provided a way to enhance and monitor their own internal alert system. We would like to express our gratitude to F.C.I. for their assistance in this training.
